I quickly realized that the night market was a microcosm of Taiwanese culture. So, like many travelers, I made a point to visit the major night market in each city I visited to sample the regional dish that made each market “famous.” What I did not realize until after a few years of living in Taiwan is that night markets are ubiquitous. Every neighborhood has one. You could walk through a seemingly quiet alleyway and stumble across an absolute gem of a night market that features the city’s best beef noodles. This is what I wanted to capture in the design of this game: that the food of any small night market can easily compete with that of the major ones. You are townsfolk exploring a dungeon after a group of adventurers has dispatched all of the monsters. Luckily for you, the adventurers left some treasure and equipment behind!Now you just need a way to split it all up... Loot Dispute is a lightweight card game featuring a twist on "I split, you choose" alongside choose-your-own scoring and set collection.An asymmetric grid of cards featuring different types of loot is laid out. The first player splits the grid along any single straight line between cards, claiming one set of loot cards for themselves. Each successive player can choose to further divide any pile in play. If another player has laid claim to the pile you choose to split, that player is "kicked off" that pile of loot and will take another turn. If turn order returns to you without you having been kicked off your loot selection, you keep those cards. Once everyone has collected their loot, and organized it by color, players draft a merchant card, each with different scoring mechanisms. Each merchant is assigned to a color of loot, with their scoring mechanism only counting towards the loot collected in that color. Players move to the next room in the dungeon (represented by a new loot card configuration being laid out) and repeat the process of cleverly splitting loot and looking to draft the most useful merchant. After 5 rooms of loot have been split, players score each color of loot based on the merchant assigned. Most points wins!

It’s All About the Spires Spire placement is always important in Cloudspire, but never more so than for the keel. The keel spires represent the darkness of the keel’s void-based technology casting a shadow across the land. As such, spire placement on a tile is the only way a keel unit can transform into its much more powerful promoted version. Some spires even impart new abilities to the promoted minions, creating an even more potent situation for the faction’s enemies. But beware! If your minion leaves an island hex with a keel spire on it, it will flip back over to its non-promoted version. To stay mighty, you’ll have to maintain a firm hand over the Source wells along your path. Heroes of Ankar The keel also boast some of the game’s most dynamic heroes. The faction’s starting hero, Chira, has the ability to increase the keel’s CP (pending proper spire placement, of course), while the keel leader General Eko counts as a spire in his own right. And don’t sleep on Chira, whose Poise ability is a personal favorite in the Chip Theory offices. Poise allows minions to increase or decrease their movement stat, a huge factor in strategic play that can keep your forces more powerful for an extra turn or help them push ahead to a quick victory.

Each Shada minion has a specific type of terrain it can move on in addition to path, forcing you and your opponents to view the map differently and take advantage of each unique layout. In addition to the unique terrain movement abilities, each minion has a special ability it can take advantage of while on that terrain. The faction’s spires also benefit from specific terrain placement, boosting their abilities and promoting strategic tile control and variety. Terrain bonuses become even more lethal with fortress upgrades that tie boosted CP and multi-terrain types into spire placement. Combine Your Forces The Shada boast a unique promotion system in which their four basic minion types (stone, wind, fire, and water) can combine with each other and form unique and powerful new minions. Fire and water become steam, and wind and stone become dust. These new minions boast new terrain allowances and abilities, and their high combination variety allows you to adapt your strategy to every new opponent. Grotesque Reflection The majority of The Graft’s minions are “grafted” versions of familiar minions from other factions that The Graft has absorbed into its ever-growing mass of tissue. You’ll recognize familiar talents that can be used in deadly new combinations against their former compatriots. Since The Graft is one giant organism, it has a unique promotion mechanic that involves absorbing defeated grafted minions into nearby spires. When those minions redeploy in a later wave, they come out on their promoted side, in which they have been grafted yet again with another previously-existing minion type. It’s gross, yes, but it’s also a riotously fun take on past factions that will have you thinking about your skills in a new way. Nucleus of Power But it’s not all about grafted minions. The heart of The Graft is Nucleus, the faction’s starting hero that also operates as a mobile fortress gate. The Graft’s fortress upgrades often impart new abilities to Nucleus itself, leading to a powerhouse that you can deploy to ravage your enemy (and, if you’re not careful, a tempting target for your opponent to take down). Though Nucleus is the brains of the operation, The Graft also is home to a variety of parasitic worms that live in its many nooks and crannies. These worms have a variety of nasty abilities, but one of the worst is Infest, which allows the worms to embed themselves in opposing heroes and villains and drain their HP away, step by deadly step. There are two types of minions in the Graft’s arsenal: worms and grafted units. Worms are semi-autonomous creatures who thrive in the folds of the Graft and who can be called upon for nasty parasitic purposes. Some of them spit acid, but all of them have in common the Infest ability, which allows them to burrow into opposing units and cause them to take damage whenever they attack. If you see one of your worms about to take the fall, try to use its Infest ability, denying your opponent a Source reward and hastening their demise in the process. Grafted units are melds of familiar base game faction units. When they upgrade, they will gain additional abilities from a different base game faction unit, symbolizing the Graft’s further processing and reshaping of the matter it absorbs. They also look pretty gross, and we love that for them. Besides Nucleus, the two other Graft heroes fall into one of the two unit types. Fury Worm represents a particularly powerful worm unit, while Graft King Nestor is the former heir monarch (brother to Jaelana) who has fallen prey to the Graft’s onslaught.

Over four decades, you’ll collect income from estates and equip troops, trade with foreigners and fortify cities, seek privileges and carry out royal assignments. Use your influence on the tsar, bribe his minions, and perhaps it is your family that will succeed in taking the Russian throne in the next century. The game is played over four rounds, each one representing approximately a decade of Ivan the Terrible’s reign. At the beginning of each round the players send their boyars to the Kremlin chambers, choosing their actions for the current decade. Then the players perform the chosen actions: receive income from cities; place boyars and warriors on the map and move them; gain and complete construction, trade and military projects; exchange goods; acquire new titles and estates. At the end of the round, the players with the most influence in the four regions receive additional rewards. An important element of the game is the Tsar’s favor,which is used to resolve all ties. Each item (starfish, sea glass, sand dollar, etc.) scores differently in your collection tableau, but you must "unlock" that item in order for it to score. Play starts with six face-up cards in the middle of the table. On your turn, you can either trade up by discarding a card and taking one card of higher value or trade down by discarding a card and taking two cards of equal or lower value. Once you collect either a three-of-a-kind or a three-in-a-row, you can score that set; add one card to your tableau, pass one card, and dedicate the last for scoring. (You'll only score for symbols that you have dedicated in this way.) Different symbols shown on the cards have different scoring mechanisms, so cleverly arrange the cards in your tableau to maximize your points. Play continues until everyone has at least five cards in their tableau, then you score. Whoever has the most points win!
