Players take on the roles of Experts seeking to understand the Alien player, who is seeking to be understood. The Experts will create and transmit signals to the Alien, who has certain rules for how to respond that must be deduced by the Experts. On a turn, the Experts arrange black and white pieces on a mat, discussing and debating how and what to send. Once finished, the Alien then replies by using pre-set rules only they can see to add, remove, and adjust the signal. The Experts try to guess the pre-set rules to win cooperatively with the Alien. After succeeding at the first round, Experts then reset and continue with the same Alien, except new rules are in play on top of the previous ones. Players must work through three rounds to solve an Alien, and complete this challenge of communication and logic.

The tarot deck contains 78 cards--56 Minor Arcana and 22 Major Arcana, the latter of which each represent a puzzle. Puzzles are solved using sets of Minor Arcana cards and clues from the story booklet and result in solution keywords that lead players to discover new pieces of the narrative. Some story passages grant items which can be later used to unlock extra scenes, and some puzzles have multiple answers, allowing players to unlock more of the story if they find all the solutions. A standalone expansion to the party game Phantom Ink, Phantom Ink: Arcana adds 75 brand new question cards, over 200 new secret objects, a cooperative 2-3 player gameplay mode, and 22 fully-illustrated tarot-themed Arcana cards with unique special abilities to spice up gameplay. Players form two teams, both competing to identify the same secret object. Teams take turns passing their spirit question cards, like What would it have as a pet? or What is a jumbo version of it called? Spirits know the secret object, and answer the questions in order to provide clues to help their mediums guess the secret object. Each turn, the mediums can spend a crystal to play one of their Arcana cards, which gives their team a one-time or permanent bonus to help them figure out the object. For example, increasing their hand size of question cards they can choose from, or letting them secretly learn the next letter of one of their clues. In the cooperative mode for two players, each turn, a player chooses one of 15 pieces of the game and they play either around the pillar for the rings, or outside for the pentaminos.
