Featured Hotness: Magical Athlete

Chaos, dice, and a cast of racers who couldn't care less about the rules, that's Magical Athlete.

This 2025 reimagining of a Japanese party game classic has been climbing Board Game Geek’s Hotness charts for good reason. It takes something as simple as rolling a die and moving a token, then breaks it in a dozen delightful directions at once.

The game got a full glow-up for this edition too, with a psychedelic new look from artist Angela Kirkwood that makes racers like Egg, Blimp, and Huge Baby impossible to forget.

Read on to learn more about the game and pick up some strategy for your first race.

What is Magical Athlete?

Magical Athlete is a racing party game for two to six players where everyone drafts a team of four wildly overpowered racers to compete across a total of four races. On your turn, you roll a die and move your racer that many spaces, simple enough, except every racer breaks that rule in its own way.

Suckerfish latches onto whoever's leaving their space. Flip-Flop skips rolling entirely and swaps places with someone else on the board. Legs ignores the dice altogether and always moves five. Once two racers cross the finish line, the race ends, points get handed out, and the board flips for the next round.

Magical Athlete Strategy Tips

Save your strongest, most controllable racer for the fourth and final race. It's worth the most points.

Plan your draft with the endgame in mind rather than picking your favorites first. Pay attention to which board side is up before choosing who to field (mild rewards steady, predictable racers, while wild favors racers who capitalize on chaos).

Don't stress about finishing in last place. Only first and second score any points in Magical Athlete, so if you're clearly not winning a race, there's no reason to panic about the order everyone else finishes in behind you.

Twenty years after its original release, Magical Athlete is proof that some games only get better with age, and judging by this reimagining, its future looks just as gloriously chaotic as its past.
