Yoshi is one of the heroes of the Mushroom World, an ally of Mario and Luigi as well as the protagonist of his own series. He is a member of the Yoshi species and has aided his brethren in saving their homeland on multiple occasions. Yoshi has also saved other kingdoms from the villain Bowser as well. In his youth, Yoshi managed to rescue and protect Baby Mario and Baby Luigi from the wrath of Kamek and the Koopa Troop. According to Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Yoshi is the only one of his species who can speak the language of the other characters, though it seems that is not his first language, as in other games, it is needed to be translated through parentheses.

Toad is a character who is Princess Peach's attendant and a long time protector of the Mushroom Kingdom. He is actually a singular character among an entire species of look-alikes (much like Yoshi is to the Yoshi species). He usually has the role of a supporting character who tries to help Mario and Luigi on their adventures; however, he is occasionally a playable character and a main protagonist at times as well. Cheep Cheeps (sometimes spelled Cheep-Cheeps) are fish that made their first appearance in Super Mario Bros. in the underwater levels. They are common recurring enemies throughout the Mario series. They are found mostly in the water but they can jump out of the water as well like in Mario Super Sluggers. There are many different species of Cheep Cheeps. Cheep Cheeps come in different colors, such as yellow and green. The most common ones, however, are red with a white patch on their stomach, a yellow (originally white) tail fin, a Mohawk-like dorsal fin and wing-like fins. They also have blue eyes and pink lips.
