Toad is a character who is Princess Peach's attendant and a long time protector of the Mushroom Kingdom. He is actually a singular character among an entire species of look-alikes (much like Yoshi is to the Yoshi species). He usually has the role of a supporting character who tries to help Mario and Luigi on their adventures; however, he is occasionally a playable character and a main protagonist at times as well. Despite being reliant on Mario, Luigi and the other heroes on times of disaster, Toad has made his own fair share of heroic acts such as in his starring role in Wario's Woods where he saves the Mushroom Kingdom from Wario's antagonistic rule and his status as one of four hero characters in Super Mario Bros. 2.

On his back, he has a pair of grey membranes and a tail. This appearance seems to be based off of Raccoon Mario. Flying Squirrel Luigi has these changes, too, but uses a green cap and overalls.

Tanooki Mario is a form of Mario or Luigi first appearing in Super Mario Bros. 3. The Mario Bros. use a Tanooki costume with a tail, that allow them to fly or attack spinning. Tanooki Mario makes a reappearance in Super Mario 3D Land for the Nintendo 3DS as the main power-up. In game, Mario becomes Tanooki Mario when he obtains a Super Leaf (since neither Raccoon Mario nor the Tanooki Suit appear in the game). In his Tanooki form, Mario can spin and use his tail to defeat enemies and destroy blocks lying over the ground. He can also glide by shaking his tail and so fall slowly. In Super Mario 3D Land, however, Tanooki Mario cannot fly. In this form, Mario can wall jump using only a corner.
