Code of Conduct Committee
Code of Conduct Committee Overview
As our community continues to grow, it’s important that everyone understands the role and importance of the Code of Conduct Committee (CoCC), as well as how it operates. Our Code of Conduct Committee is a volunteer group of Community Leaders and Senior or Executive Managers of GG, tasked with ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all members by investigating serious Code of Conduct violations and recommending permanent disciplinary actions when necessary.
A CoCC unanimous decision is REQUIRED for bans in our community
What is the Code of Conduct Committee?
The CoCC is responsible for addressing serious Code of Conduct complaints, which may involve recommending permanent disciplinary actions, such as bans. The goal of the committee is to ensure that all members of our community feel safe, respected, and heard.
How Does It Work?
When a complaint is serious enough (escalated by a Senior Manager or requested by a community Member), the CoCC:
- Gathers Information: The committee collects relevant information from all involved parties. This may include written reports and personal interviews if necessary.
- Conducts Interviews: In-person interviews are conducted when requested or required to gain clarity on the situation.
- Collaborative Decision-Making: The committee debates the situation to reach a true unanimous consensus. If there is disagreement, the committee errs on the side of a lesser action, though it is worth noting that full agreement has always been achieved in past decisions.
To join the COCC, you must either be a Senior Manager or a Community Ambassador with more than 1 year experience in our community, and have been endorsed by someone currently on the CoCC. There are rare exceptions on a case by case basis.
Why Does This Matter?
The CoCC ensures transparency and fairness in our community. As we continue to grow, we’ve listened to feedback about potential biases within a staff-only committee. In response, we expanded the committee to include trusted members of the community who are not staff.

Transparency and Logs
To ensure full transparency, we will maintain a dated log in our #ban-list-partial thread hosted in our community Discord server. This log will track when CoCC members join or leave the committee, allowing the community to see what decisions members were involved in. This step is part of our ongoing commitment to accountability. Please note that not all decisions by the CoCC are posted in our #partial-bans thread, only ones that pertain to wider community safety.

*Partial* Public Disclosure of Code of Conduct Bans
The following list represents a limited subset of Code of Conduct outcomes and is not a complete record of all bans, suspensions, or disciplinary actions taken by Gamers Guild.
What This List Is and Is Not
This public disclosure exists to support community safety and transparency in situations where the Code of Conduct Committee has determined that a ban involves conduct that may pose a risk beyond a single interpersonal dispute.
This list is not intended to:
- Punish or shame individuals
- Relitigate events or publish detailed allegations
- Assert criminal guilt or legal conclusions
- Replace law enforcement or judicial processes
Gamers Guild does not make criminal determinations. The Code of Conduct Committee is an administrative body whose role is limited to protecting the safety, wellbeing, and integrity of our community spaces.
Purpose of Public Disclosure
Public disclosure is used sparingly and only after a ban has been issued. When it is used, it serves to:
- Signal that serious boundary, safety, or conduct violations occurred
- Clarify that the matter involved more than a minor or isolated disagreement
- Allow community members to recognize and avoid potential safety risks
- Document that a formal review process occurred and action was taken
Disclosures are written to describe the category and seriousness of conduct, not to provide exhaustive detail. Specific evidence, private communications, and identifying information of impacted individuals are not published.
Scope of This List
- This list includes only those bans the Committee has determined warrant public disclosure due to broader community safety considerations.
- Many bans and disciplinary actions are handled privately and will not appear here.
- When minors are involved, disclosures reference the adult guardian rather than the minor directly.
Context and Scope
The individuals listed here represent a very small fraction of overall community participation. Well under one tenth of one percent of total visits, events, and engagements across Gamers Guild locations.
While no community space can ever be completely risk-free, we believe that clear expectations, early intervention, transparent processes, and public accountability meaningfully reduce harm and improve safety outcomes.
Our Code of Conduct, Code of Conduct Committee, and limited public disclosure practices exist to support our Mission to provide safe, inclusive gaming spaces for everyone who is willing to abide by our Code of Conduct.
Disputes, Oversight, and Legal Context
If you believe your inclusion on this list is incorrect or wish to dispute the Committee’s determination, please be aware that Gamers Guild Arizona retains litigation counsel through Greenberg Traurig, LLP, a national law firm with extensive experience in defamation, civil litigation, and organizational risk matters.
All public disclosures are issued following a formal review by the Gamers Guild Code of Conduct Committee. The Committee is composed of senior staff and long-standing community leaders, and unanimous agreement is required for permanent bans and public disclosure.
Current and prior Committee membership during the periods relevant to this list includes:
March 1, 2021 - October 24, 2024
• Aaron C.
• Erik S.
• Kristen P.
October 24, 2024 - Present
• Aaron C.
• Erik S.
• Nick B.
• Emma I.
• Jason F.
Public disclosures are intentionally limited in detail and are written to reflect only information the Committee believes to be accurate, supportable, and necessary to address community safety. To reiterate, they are not intended to shame, punish, or assert criminal guilt.
Gamers Guild AZ stands by the substance of its disclosures and will defend them as appropriate.
All disputes, legal correspondence, or requests for reconsideration must be directed to codeofconduct@gamersguildaz.com, where they will be routed through appropriate legal and administrative channels.
Nick Owenby (2024)
90-day ban from premises (return date: June 29, 2024) and permanently banned from trading on premises for trading counterfeit Magic: The Gathering cards on two occasions.
The second incident was permitted in error by the business, and responsibility was acknowledged.
Child of Nick Owenby (2024)
90-day ban from premises (return date: June 29, 2024) and permanently banned from trading on premises for trading counterfeit Magic: The Gathering cards on two occasions.
Responsibility for the second incident was acknowledged by the business.
Donald Jensen (2024)
Banned from premises and online for deadnaming a customer.
Coaching was offered and declined; the matter was escalated to a ban.
Kevin Russell (2024)
Banned from premises and online following three simultaneous complaints of sexual harassment toward women.
No coaching was offered due to severity.
James Saunders (2024)
Banned from premises and online for homophobic slurs and hate speech, with additional concerns regarding potential doxing and forgery.
Child of Hockenberry (2024)
Banned from premises for theft of company property valued at $359.99 and over $1,200 in documented fraud.
Benjamin “Benny” Norwood (October 12, 2024)
Banned from premises and online for use of a slur while representing Gamers Guild.
Coaching was offered and declined; the matter was escalated to a ban.
Jason Carter (May 30, 2025)
Permanently banned from premises and online for viewing sexually explicit material in a public venue and repeated inappropriate conduct toward staff and guests, including sexually suggestive comments and boundary violations involving younger individuals.
Jared Hatch (August 15, 2025)
Permanently banned from premises and online for repeated abusive behavior toward staff, including harassment after prior warnings, and for targeting the business itself.
Multiple incidents were documented internally and corroborated by similar reports from other game stores. The Committee found a clear pattern of escalating hostility and determined he posed a risk to the wider community.
Bill Berry (August 31, 2025)
Permanently banned from premises and online for repeated hostile and abusive conduct toward staff. Reports documented a pattern of targeting female staff and causing distress, while presenting differently in escalated conversations with management.
Coaching and firm boundaries did not alter the behavior pattern.
Mark Christie (September 13, 2025)
Permanently banned from premises and online following a subsequent Code of Conduct investigation. Mr. Christie had previously been the subject of a substantiated complaint involving demeaning comments and harassment of female-presenting wait staff, for which he was coached and placed on a monitor list with clear expectations.
In 2025, a new investigation was initiated following a complaint alleging inappropriate and sexualized conduct toward a community member, including reported offers of money for personal adult services and exposure to sexual content without consent occurring off-site after leaving a Gamers Guild location.
The Committee reviewed staff observations, witness statements, and corroborating information, and determined that the reported conduct, along with additional reports of disruptive and confrontational behavior involving staff and customers, showed overlap with prior substantiated issues and posed an ongoing risk to community safety.
Nathan William Schuyler (November 3, 2025)
Permanently banned from all Gamers Guild premises, events, and online communities for repeated harassment of staff, hate speech toward LGBTQ+ members, and defamation of ownership involving false “stolen valor” claims. Despite a prior investigation and formal no-contact order, Mr. Schuyler continued to send hostile and defamatory communications, including accusations that the business was “grooming children” and threats of legal escalation.
The Committee unanimously determined this conduct constituted ongoing harassment and a clear risk to community safety and reputation.
Madisyn Shurtz (December 16th, 2025)
Permanently banned from all Gamers Guild premises, events, and online communities. The Committee reviewed multiple reports regarding serious misconduct during an off-site community gathering, including non-consensual and coercive sexual boundary violations involving another community member.
Additional concerns included documented statements in Pokémon community spaces referencing drug use and conduct inconsistent with the responsibilities and expectations of a community leadership role.
The Committee unanimously determined that this conduct represented a severe breach of community safety and trust and posed an ongoing risk of harm. As required under Pokémon Organized Play standards, the findings were also reported to Pokémon Organized Play.
